“When I am engaged in making these things I often feel like I am connecting to a very primitive & ancient form of human endeavor. After all, scratching charcoal, pigmented clay, & chalk onto a surface to create images is something our kind has felt compelled to do for at least twenty thousand years. Doing this, I believe, is part of what we strange animals are at our core. There’s nothing “arty” or sophisticated about it - creating is simply what defines our species. I think that’s why the act of making feeds one’s spirit & matters more than the result. Watching something take shape as I work is the point for me.”
